Goal:

The goal of Parker’s House is to promote awareness of the problems surrounding homelessness and to provide support for a single family as they are rebuilding their lives following a period of homelessness.

In many cases when a family has completed an emergency shelter program, such as the one offered by Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN), they aren't quite ready for full independence and can benefit from an additional 3 to 6 months of semi-independence. That's where Parker's House comes in. A family will live in Parker's House with most expenses covered, allowing them the opportunity to save money for the expense of moving to permanent housing and regain some of their dignity.

Providing sustainable independence for a formerly homeless family is a lofty goal, but a goal that is possible through The Friends of Parker's House.

How It Works:

When a family loses their home, many times they lose most or all of their possessions. This includes items which you and I take for granted - pots & pans, dishes, flatware, etc. The idea is to provide these items for them when they arrive at Parker's House, then allow them to take these items with them when they leave to help establish their household. If you and I can provide these household materials for them they stand a much better chance of success.

Case Management:

Residents at Parker's House participate in a weekly case management and budget counseling session called "Pizza Night". During this weekly visit where the family and executive director enjoy pizza, residents discuss any current needs, review their financial situation, talk about available resources and, most importantly, continue the search for permanent housing. Budget counseling concentrates on a program developed specifically for Parker's House that is a combination of principles based on Dave Ramsey's program and the simple book The Richest Man in Babylon.

By learning sound financial principles, families can move away from homelessness with the confidence that comes from understanding how to budget and manage their household funds.
